Han dynasty contributed to the first rising tide in the development of Chinese feudal society. Under the leadership of rulers, Han dynasty took on a panorama of political stability, economic growth and cultural prosperity, laying a solid foundation for the art development and especially providing the profound social conditions for the development of horse-chariot images of Han dynasty. Centering Xi’an and Luoyang, the development of horse-chariot in the two-capital region represented the highest level of horse-chariot art. Meanwhile, the horse-chariot image also reflected the social life and ideology of Han dynasty, refracting the influences imposed upon the economy, culture and painting of Han dynasty, especially upon the horse-chariot art, along with the emergence the powerful landlord and formation of Feudal landlord estate economy. The thesis will present the research on the horse-chariot images of Han dynasty from the following aspects:1. Instruction. It is intended to introduce the background, range and status of study, find out the limitations of previous studies and pave way for the study to come. Besides, the introduction illuminates the research significance, methodology and innovations of the thesis.2. The discovery and study of the horse-chariot images of Han dynasty. It mainly discusses the excavation and study of the mural paintings in tombs of Han dynasty before the foundation of the PRC, especially the excavations, discoveries and researches of the32mural paintings in tombs of Han dynasty discovered in the two-capital region, so as to introduce the discovery and study of the horse-chariot images in those tombs and the correlations among them. At the same time, the thesis illustrates three research patterns of the horse-chariot images in the two-capital region.3. The contents, periodization and comparison of horse-chariot images of Han dynasty will be the highlighted in this thesis. This thesis counted the sixteen tombs with horse-chariot wall pictures of Han Dynasty around Xi’an and Luoyang, made a brief introduction of their unearthing condition and formation, and conducted a study of these pictures in three periods:the Late Han Dynasty from32BC to6AD, the Wangmang-Early Eastern Han Dynasty period,7AD-75AD, and after-middle Eastern Han Dynasty period,76AD-Cao Wei period, compared the internal connection of different horse-chariot quantities between eastern Han Dynasty and eastern Han Dynasty as well as the Xi’an and Luoyang areas, and made an analysis of the reason for the popularity of the long horse-chariot painting of the eastern Han Dynasty.4. The reasons for the background and condition of the popularity of the horse-chariot painting of the tombs of Han Dynasty around Xi’an and Luoyang areas. Firstly, the popularity of these horse-chariot paintings can be summed into three factors:the economic and social development, the change of dominating ideologies and the restriction of the legal system. Secondly, the condition of the popularity of these horse-chariot paintings was the emergence of tomb-walls and the prosperity of the wall paintings of the royal families.The ending part made a systematic summary, and made a conclusion of the study, explained the internal connection between these horse-chariot painting of both western and eastern Han dynasty around Xi’an and Luoyang areas, and decided the finite studying interests.
