Tang Dynasty was a peaked era of development of feudal society during Chinesehistory. Besides the powerful nationhood and prosperous commerce, the liberalattitude and environment in Tang culture indicated the magnanimous and generousqualities of the graceful times. With the increasing demand of material life andproceeding development of silk-road and cultural communications, therefore, TangDynasty had the most various and prosperous motifs in textiles than any earlier times.Not only inherited the conventional styles from traditional Chinese arts, but Tangtextiles also absorbed and merged the artistic essences from exotic motifs. As a glaryconsequence, a characteristically coiled motif was derived-Volume grass grain, withChinese aesthetic.Following the insight of ancient Chinese, all the lives are harmonious existing,and the most advanced mission of art is based on the appearance and phenomenon oflivings in the universe. The volume grass grain, a category of vivid and animatedmotif, precisely expresses the yearning of ancient people for the beauty ofunlimited-expanding vitalities. Therefore, the volume grass grain, as a classic motifwith smooth and curly structure, started to play a considerably important role indecoration of Tang-dynasty raiment.Through7chapters in total, this article analyses and studies on visual stylization,technics and materials of volume grass grain. The1stchapter introduces thebackground and research values of studying volume grass grain, as well as the trendof development of this unique motif. The2ndchapter is started from the origin andconcept of volume grass grain, especially the afference and development in China,and then analyses its status and significance.The most emphasized parts are the3rdand4thchapters, which focus on formativetechnology of the volume grass grain. The3rdchapter mainly parses the art characters.Firstly the compositing forms of volume grass grain in Tang textiles are enumeratedand analyzed, and then formatives of floras and three types of combination aresketched. At the end of this chapter, the scheme of colors for volume grass grain inTang raiment is analyzed by figures and summarized. In the4thchapter, technology, materials and institutions of motif formats in Tang Dynasty are anatomized indifferent parts. The5topics, which are categorized by techniques, are brocading,print-dyeing, broidering, Chinese silk tapestrying (kesi), and hand-drawing volumegrass grains that shows different artistic impressions of them on various basalmaterials with diverse skills. The materials of volume grass grain are divided into3topics, which are natural dyes, mineral dyes and colored yarns. These parts are notonly indicating the origin and extraction methods of dyes for volume grass grain inTang era, but also comparing the coloring characteristics of dyes through charts. Atthe end of this chapter, aesthetic of motif design and process management ofmotif-format are analyzed plainly, understanding the institutions of using volumegrass grain as motif in Tang raiment, such as the norm of dimensions, weight andintensity and complexity.The5thchapter is the inspiration on modern design of patterns from volume grassgrain in Tang Dynasty, which aims to explain that pattern design is not only createdfrom natural essences but also comes from re-creation of traditional and nationalelements. This chapter describes the practices of design, from the ideas of preparationstage, till the difficulties during design processes, and achieving the expectations withimprovements. The last chapter summarizes the volume grass grain in Tang raiment infull scales, and figured out the limited points of this research article.Every single designer would try and cope with excavating, analyzing andinnovating conventional motifs and formats, which have vital meanings on protectingand inheriting those traditional motifs and arts. As results, extraordinary aesthetic anddiverse techniques of Tang people are drawn; formative perception and artistic charmof volume grass grain in Tang-dynasty textiles are figured; and the beauty, culturaldeposits and conception of Tang motifs in the art of traditional decoration are revealedto modern studies and life.
