Non-dialogue animation is a kind of artistic form which can convey the story, thepersonalities of roles, the emotion and some other contents to the audience by non-verbalways. This method makes the non-dialogue animation films unique and it’s a type of artisticpractice in cross-linguistic exchange. The thesis analyses the non-dialogue animation frommultiple angles with examples and the body is divided into seven sections:The first chapter is introduction, it defines the non-dialogue animation and analyses thevalues of this research, describes the historical background and current situation of domesticand foreign research briefly, shows the research methods and innovations of this paper.The second chapter focuses on the uniqueness of non-dialogue animation and comparesthe related art forms with the object of study. It discusses the differences between animatedcartoon and silent animation from production process, means of artistic expression andinformation communication. It also explores the essential differences between non-dialogueanimation and some other non-verbal art forms, such as mime, silent film, dance and drama,which provide experience to the creation of non-dialogue animation.The third chapter is mainly about the animation narrative. It indicates that not all storiescan be expressed without the help of dialogues. This section divides the non-dialogueanimation into two types according to their contents, summarizes the common methods ofimage narrative and analyzes why those methods can reduce the likelihood of usingdialogues.The fourth chapter studies the performance of the roles in non-dialogue animation anddiscusses about how the characters perform in the situations where the dialogue is notnecessary. This section proposes the points of the transformation from dialogue to movementand attempt to explain how to express the inner emotions by body language.The fifth chapter elaborates the sound in non-dialogue animation. The music and soundeffects have positive effects to the non-dialogue animation. It also states that the relationshipbetween music and picture will become much closer when the film is leaded by sound.The sixth chapter points out the advantages and disadvantages in the development ofnon-dialogue animation today. It confirms the object of study as an experimental vanguard andclaims that silent cartoon is instructive for learners.The seventh chapter is conclusion, which emphasizes that the creator should not removethe dialogue in order to avoid dubbing and the non-verbal form only aims at a betterperformance. It encourages a diversified development of animation. Although animationwithout dialogues shares a low proportion in the market, we should affirm its value and promote its development by getting inspirations from other kinds of non-verbal art. Theresearch of non-dialogue animation is positive the theory and the practice of animation.The paper analyses the characteristics of non-dialogue animation from different angles. Itaims to provide more ideas to the animation creators and hopes that could be a reference to theinternationalization of domestic animation.
