| A language is the carrier of a certain culture, which contains rich cultural implications. Translation is a process or behavior that converts a language into another. It no doubt will involve the handling and converting of cultural elements between two languages, and it is also noteworthy that different handling of these cultural elements will lead to varied translation results. Therefore, how to cope with cultural elements in the source text during translating becomes an important issue in translation studies.“Association effectâ€, as an abstract concept applied in translation, is of great enlightening significance on how to handle cultural diversity problem in translation. Its application in translation shall date from the 1970 s. “The culture turn in translation†happened then has been gradually leading the combination of translation studies with other subjects. Under this situation, cognitive psychology is applied into translation studies. Thus, “associationâ€, initially a psychological concept, has gradually become a skill researched in translation. To study “association†in translation, in other words, is to explore the cognitive process of it as well as the effect it arouses during and after translating, which is the “association effect†that will be discussed in this thesis.On this account, from a standpoint of cognitive psychology of translation, this thesis will focus on association effect?s application in cultural diversity translation from English to Chinese, aiming to realize a systematical understanding on “association effect in translationâ€. It will state the functioning basis of association effect, summarizing the matters need attention when it is applied in translating. Then, through English-to-Chinese translations? studies, it will aim at researching on the translation strategies involved in the application of association effect and the different translation results they create, and discuss how to choose among these strategies so as to gain good translation. |
