The concept of "Chinese Western Films" has been put forward by Mr Zhong Dianfei, who was our country’s famous film theory pioneer.During the later 30 years, Chinese Western Films went through a boom time in the early, a confused and wandering time in the mid, and then reached to "two modes" of development recently. The development and expansion of Chinese Western Films were all developed by China’s fifth-generation director. For their part, the relationship between the fifth-generation directors and Chinese Western Films is supplement each other. The fifth-generation directors were honored in many International film festivals, and they draw a brilliant future to Chinese Western Films. They build a great achievement of this extraordinary and influence genre of Chinese film art, at the same time also made their own screen. However, for the latest generation of Chinese filmdom- the group of “the sixth-generation directors”, they were feed up by the fifth-generation directors’ works, and which give them the most nutrients were the fifth-generation directors’ works, the Chinese Western Films. In recent years, the sixth-generation directors’ works are growing prominent by using their own talent, and then successfully catch the attention of both domestic and international filmdom. They become a new force which cannot be neglected. There are both inheritance and rebellion in their works contracted with their “father’s”, formed a distinct perspective and style. They no longer stand on the "stage", but moved to the "platform". The sixth-generation directors’ works came into its own unique style, they let the characters, events, and even the concept of marginalization continuously to present to the front of audience. To a certain extent, they promote the development of Chinese film. As the time of the film market has walked in an era of commodity economy, box office and audience’s tastes become a reality problem which directors have to take into account. Affected by market factors, the documentary film of the sixth-generation directors’ become the shackles of their own development on the contrary. The less audience also restricting their development. The pressure of them are also big: They were not only fight with the fifth-generation directors for the film market resources, but also acting on international convention, compete with other countries’ films, at the same time bear with the impact of mass culture, and profitable operation of the market. So at this time, the sixth-generation directors all walked on a way of "extract, rebellious, return". Their return path make Chinese Western Films honored again. This part of films are not a simple genre film, but with a heavy historical mission,digging into the kernel of national spirit deeply, and examining the national spirit carefully. After three generations of the directors, its connotation is deep and wide. In the new century’s context of the creation, the sixth-generation directors need to pay more attention to the balance of business and art. This process has two phases: convert to the mainstream and self-adaptation. The development history of the Chinese Western Films is also the fourth-generation, the fifth-generation, and the sixth-generation directors’ growth records and working history. The sixth-generation directors’ “new Chinese Western Films” must be able to comply with the tide of the time, finding a balance in the business and the arts, become an excellent show window which can display our national spirit to the world.
