This thesis reviews the theory of metaphor and aims to explore its application to teaching German as foreign language. It investigates the role of metaphors in language in general and specifically in foreign language acquisition.Firstly this paper explores the cognitive linguistic theories of Lakoff and Johnson and advocates the inherent presence of metaphors in our language. Then by referring to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages it explores the necessity of integrating metaphor-awareness. Thirdly the thesis argues that learners can develop and improve their linguistic-, literary-, and cultural conpetences by the awareness of metaphor. In the next part it is demonstrated how awareness raising of metaphor can be integrated into foreign language teaching lessons. One conceptual lesson of existing textbook is developed for college learners.
