Practice Study Report On E-C Translation Of Excerpted Historical Works

This thesis is composed in the form of practice study report which analyzes the E-C translation of excerpted historical works. The translation materials are some excerpts chosen from a famous western historical work The Cambridge History of Africa:From 1870 to 1905. Some historical works can be classified into literature work, such as Records of the Historian, but The Cambridge History of Africa is a non-literature work with high academic value. The translation of historical works is paid less attention at present, and there are insufficient research documents on it.With the supervisor’s guidance, the author works on the E-C translation of excerpted historical works as translation practice during the second year of study for maser degree. The author launches a study on the translation process and translation action. In the report, the author emphasizes the importance of preparation before translation and makes a detailed statement of while-translation activities. Besides, the author chooses Functionalist Skopos Theory as guiding theory and analyzes the importance of its application in the E-C translation of historical works. For example, the theory can be applied in translation principles, language styles and the choice of translation strategies. With some case analysis, the author enumerates some translation problems in the task and provides some personal views and advice on the choice of translation strategies. Literal translation is chosen as a primary strategy to E-C translation of historical works.The report is produced to provide some theoretical enlightenment and method guidance on the E-C translation of historical works and appeal academia to strengthen further study.
