On Translator’s Subjectivity In Cultural Translation

With the introduction of “cultural turn” in the 1980 s, the important status of the translator has been put into a prominent situation and the study of translator’s subjectivity once became a heated topic discussed among researchers. More and more people being aware of the fact that translation is no longer considered as a simple conversation process from the original to the target language, but a process full of cultural connotation with so much creativity. However, many studies emphasize too much on the significance of translator’s subjectivity, instead of the discussion and analysis of the factors that affect Howard Goldblatt. Therefore, in the translation process, it is still a controversial topic on how to apply translator’s subjectivity properly.As an important bridge of translating Chinese literature to the world, Howard Goldblatt plays an essential part in the translation process and at the same time, he enjoys the highest position in Chinese literature translators in the world of English. At present, Chinese translation scholars have studied limited versions of Goldblatt such as Red Sorghum, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, and The Story of Hulan River, from the aspects of Skopos theory, theory of rewriting in translation, theory of translation norms, etc. Hardly any attention is paid to Mi--- the works of Su Tong.This thesis aims to analyze the original text of Rice and its English version by comparison and contrast with the aim to elaborate on the manifestations of the translator’s subjectivity in the whole translating activity. From both subjective and objective factors, this thesis analyzes Howard Goldblatt’s influence on his translationversion of Rice, and illustrates his compensation principles and strategies in the translation process through living examples.The author hopes that the thesis can make a supplement to the translation studies of Howard Goldblatt, deepen the understanding of translator’s subjectivity for people in translation, and pay more attention to it. From the case study on Goldblatt, this thesis may have an active influence on how to apply and evaluate translator’s subjectivity in translation.
