| Aesthetics has been playing a special role in the development of translation theories. The same is true of Chinese aesthetics in the academic study of translation, for the combination of the two constructs one of the most important characteristics in Chinese translation theory. In the book An Introduction to Translation and Aesthetics, Professor Liu Miqing systemically expounds the category and assignment of translation aesthetics, aesthetic object and aesthetic subject of translation, the general rule of aesthetic experience and aesthetic standards of translation respectively, bringing translation aesthetics to a new level.This thesis takes The Classic of Tea and its English version as a study corpus to explore the aesthetic value at the levels of sound, diction and discourse in the source text and their corresponding beauty reconstruction in the version from the perspective of aesthetics. The purpose of the study is to analyze and reveal how the translators have managed to reconstruct the Trans-lingual aesthetic value at different levels, and how the universal and complimentary techniques are employed in the process of translation to facilitate the target readers’better appreciation and understanding of the aesthetic ideology in The Classic of Tea.This thesis is divided into five parts:the first part is an overall introduction of the thesis, focusing on the necessity in the combination of translation and aesthetics. A brief presentation is then given on the basic regulation of translation aesthetics representation. The research difficulties and main research methodologies are also mentioned in this chapter. The second part is literature review. The origin and development of translation, aesthetics and their combination in the history of translation home and abroad are reviewed briefly. In addition, the major theory of modern translation aesthetics has also been mentioned as a theoretical support. In the third part, the author discusses the aesthetic representation subject and object in literary translation. The fourth chapter, being the major part of the thesis, provides the technical and cultural information of The Classic of Tea as the basis, and then carries out the analysis of aesthetic representation in the English version. A summary is followed of the main patterns of form reconstruction for aesthetics. The last part comes to a tentative conclusion of the study, i.e. the main patterns worked out through the analysis are made up of imitation and recast. It is demonstrated in the process that translators have managed well to represent the source text, making both the aesthetic subject and object united by way of reconstructing the aesthetic values in sounds, forms and meaning. |
