Long scroll is the most prevalent form of Chinese painting. The composition of the long scroll stretches from right to left. The painter assemble lots of elements flexibly but orderly. Horizontal type is the main composition model of the Chinese painting and the Chinese painting can be more expressive in the form of long scroll. The appreciators can uncurl the long scroll to admire. It’s easy to carry and see, so it has attracted a lot of seekers. The scroll of flower and bird painting has several different forms with the same or different material combinations. Some of the scrolls can be created in subsection with the signatures. The spaces between the subsections are the same. The themes form a coherent whole and forms in the layout are diverse. The scroll usually comes in sections or connected by indirections. It’s a very dynamic art and it may accompany people through time and space. This is the reason why the long scroll of flower and bird painting is unique in the history of art. So after more than a thousand years of continuous efforts and ceaseless practices by millions of painters, a whole set of ways of space expression has been developed gradually. We must pay more attention to this form of Chinese painting to have a deeper understanding and then put it to a good use. Making an approach to the spatial relationships between the sections in the flower and bird painting helps to extend the pattern of traditional Chinese art. Study on the spatial arrangement is a very practical significance of the work.
