| America stepped into industrialization and urbanization during the late 19 th and early the 20 th centuries, that American industry gradually replaced agriculture and became the pillar of American economy. Not only did the western and eastern big cities emerge in large numbers but also small and medium-sized cities even countries developed quickly. American social transformation started from agricultural society to industrial society, thereby initiating alteration of American class structure.During this period of time, outdated middle class dominated by owner-peasant was gradually replaced by new white-collar class. The new middle class expressed different features in city and country. Although new middle class occupied the numerical superiority, it could not offset the resistant and opposing feelings of traditional middle class in the transformation. The thesis mainly comparing the commons and differences between city and country explores the position and influence of urban-rural middle class.The thesis consists of three parts: the first part is American social transformation and changeover of old and new middle class during the late 19 th and early the 20 th centuries. The second part is the comparison of commons and differences of urban-rural middle class in terms of politics, economy, society and education. The third part is American urban-rural middle class’ s position and influence in society. |
