Interpreting Strategies Of Expressions With Chinese Characteristics From The Perspective Of Deverbalization

Interpretive theory is one of the most important theories applied to interpreting practice. Deverbalization is the core of the theory. According to the theory, the ultimate purpose of interpreting is to pass on information, to convey meaning instead of the form of source language. The interpreter has to go through the stage of deverbalization, breaking away from language constraints to achieve communication and understanding between people speaking different languages and having different cultural backgrounds. This paper, from the perspective of deverbalization of interpretive theory, studies the interpreting of expressions with Chinese characteristics in the case of Government Work Report by Premier Li Keqiang. There is some difficulty in interpreting expressions with Chinese characteristics, which include culture-loaded expressions, shortened number form phrases, neologisms, idioms, figures of speech and so on, whose equivalent forms can’t be found in the target language. So through simultaneous interpreting practice, comparison with other translation version, study and reflection, this paper puts forward three interpreting strategies, that is, free translation, simplification and explanation. It is expected that those interpreting strategies can shed new light and be helpful in dealing with difficulties in interpreting practice in similar situations.
