On The Application Of Syntactic Linearity Principle In Conference Interpreting

As an important means of cross-cultural communication, conference interpretation came out at the end of World War Ⅱ, it had been widely accepted around the world, especially used widely in international meetings.As a translation of foreign affairs, conference interpretation has a high demands on the accuracy of the translation and presentation skills of the interpreter. Therefore, in order to make the interpreter can express the views and thoughts of spokesman well, and be able to express the full complex sentence structure faster and better, to use syntactic linearity principle is one of the best translation means. The Syntactic linearity principle refers to the primitive sentence order as the interpreters heard, cut the entire sentence into units of sense-group or units of information, then using conjunctions to connect these units naturally, and translating the overall meaning.Nevertheless, the syntactic linearity principle has a strong flexibility, which in the process of interpretation can focus on the basis of units of meaning, as long as the interpreter adds the appropriate conjunctions.This thesis is on the application of syntactic linearity in interpretation, which combined with the press conference of Premier Li in 2013 as an example of using this method, to study the application of syntactic linearity principle in conference interpretation especially in major domestic and foreign correspondent conference. The first chapter is to analyze the background and significance of application the syntactic linearity principles in the press conference which contains foreign and native journalists, to treat this as the basis of this paper. The second chapter is the task description about the practice of the author does in the process of writing this paper. The third chapter describes specifically the feasibility of syntactic linearity principle in conference interpretation and in practical application. The fourth chapter analyzes specifically the examples of interpretation on the Premier Li Keqiang’s press conference in 2013, and combined with the author’s own translation for comparison, to study the application of syntactic linearity principle in this conference, this report has taken a conclusion from the research and analysis, that as one of the most useful translation principle, the linearity syntactic principle has the feasibility in conference interpretation, it can do a great favor to the interpreters. It can not only save the interpreters’ time, reduce their memory stress, but also make the sentences clear and coherent, and in accord with the thoughts which the speaker expresses. We must pay attention to these issues while we use the linearity syntactic principle, because of time limited, the interpreters must hold on the most important information correctly to divide the sentences, then add the appropriate words to connect, rather than blindly divide the sentences just in order to save time, it may lead to logic confused, neither the speaker’s thoughts can express correctly, nor the journalists can understand.
