The Application Of Syntactic Linearity In Consecutive Interpretation

With the development of economic globalization and international interactions, interpretation plays an important role in intercultural communication, and consecutive interpreters are communicators for people of different languages and different cultures. According to Paris interpretive theory, the paper wants to analyze the application of principles of syntactic linearity in consecutive interpretation. Based on the research on Prime Minister Li keqiang’s press conference during the NPC and CPPCC sessions in 2014 and my personal practice, I want to discuss the applicability of principles of syntactic linearity in consecutive interpretation.Main directions of research are now lies in the principles of syntactic linearity in simultaneous interpreting, and few explore the application of principles of syntactic linearity in consecutive interpretation. As compared to simultaneous translation, interpreter in consecutive interpretation has more time to think, so they can better organize language structures and make translation easier to understand. As a result, consecutive interpreters can deal with the syntactic linearity principle more flexibly and give a better translation.This paper is divided into four parts:The first part mainly analyses the research background of this paper, and literature review about consecutive interpreting, interpretive theory and syntactic linearity principle as well as the mission profile and significance of the research. The second part of the paper mainly tells the process of the study, including the selection of cases, the preparation before translation, transliteration, the problems and the methods to solve the problems in the task. The third part mainly discusses the difference between consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpreting and the characteristics of consecutive interpretation; the main ideas and the triangle model of the theory of interpretive theory:understanding, deverbalization and re-expression; the advantages of the syntactic linearity principle and its applicability in consecutive interpretation under the guidance of the theory; the applicability of syntactic linearity principle in the two phase of consecutive interpretation on the basis of the interpretive theory and the ideas and characteristics of consecutive interpreting, and raises the assumption that syntactic linearity principle is applicable to consecutive interpreting through the meaning connection, including vocabulary and sentence means. The fourth part is the personal practice about the press conference during the NPC and CPPCC sessions in 2014. The writer raises three aspects to analyze this hypothesis by practice, namely, the usage of lexical and syntactic means of conversion to make the syntactic linearity principle more consistent with the expressions of the English language; the effect of application of notes to translation quality as well as the influence of syntactic linearity principle on interpreter’s reactions.Through the research, the application of syntactic linearity principle in consecutive interpretation not only makes higher-quality translations but also reduce the stress placed on interpreters. This paper guides interpreters in practice to focus more on the importance of syntactic linearity in their future practice, and improve their interpretation skills from advancing their techniques in taking notes and translation skills.
