In this thesis, the register theory is used to account for the process of translation of dialogues with The Inn of the Two Witches as a case. This thesis, with analysis, points out that in the process of fictional dialogue translation, the translator should try his or her best to apply register theory to reflect the personalities of fictional characters. The register, proposed by M.A.K Halliday, generally means the context or the occasion where the language is used. It includes three factors, the field, the tenor and the mode, which affect the language usage and decide the register. Any discourse, orally or literally, could be analyzed from the three factors. With the case studies, the thesis proposes that the translation of dialogues can be improved in the following ways:first, the translator should enrich and explain the discourse for more accurate translation according to the field, which includes the theme and atmosphere of the discourse; second, the translator should appropriately use the dialect and idioms, after studying the effect of the tenor, especially the identity and status of the discourse, on the translation process; third, the translator should also fix the off-the-cuff colloquial style of the fictional dialogue from the aspect of the mode, and adopt short sentence mode and model particles to enhance the oral features of fictional dialogue.
