In the80years’ development of Chinese animation, the most glorious stage is in the late1950s when an artistic style was established. It is known as the "Chinese School" with the centralidea to demonstrate the unique Eastern art in animation. However, due to multiple factors, the"China School" has gradually declined. Today, with the revival of China animation, genre study ofthe subject has become an urgent issue. Compared with artistic achievements made by the ChineseSchool, commercial successes in the field done by Japanese and Americans are much moresignificant. Besides, an “animation culture” has developed among Japanese and Americanaudience and mingled with the local popular culture. One of the important reasons for thisphenomenon is that a set of mature types of animation have formed after being tested in marketsfor a long time. These types concern not only animating modes and transmitting channels, but alsoclassifications of audience and accurate analysis of their psychology. Animation belongs to filmart, but it has its own peculiarities when it comes to its artistic expressive force and technicalmethods, and thus it is necessary for us to study it as a relatively independent art. Animation, similar to realistic films, includes various elements such as script, photography, sound, editor, director and acting. Since film theory is applicable to the study of animation, the theoretical studyof animation types can also borrow the theory of film genre. This paper aims to study commercialanimation with the help of film genre theory so that it may be of assistance in promoting thedevelopment of Chinese animation industry. Although both American and Japanese havedeveloped their own types and models, they are difficult to meet the needs of the Chinese market. To solve the issue about the development trend of Chinese animation, this paper attempts to makea comprehensive analysis of social and cultural factors through the development of Chineseanimation art, sum up main forms and characteristics of animation types of every period, analyzemain reasons why typed animations can be accepted by the audience, and finally based on theabove findings, summarize the development features of Chinese typed animation.
