Flower and bird painting has always been a favorite theme of Chinese since ancient times. Withdeveloped economy and prosperous culture, Ming dynasty was an important era in the history of ancientChinese flower-and-bird paintings, especially during the Xuande to hongzhi period. XuandeEmperor Zhu Zhanji was fond of poetry, calligraphy and painting, in order to restore the grandoccasion of art academies in Song dynasty, folk master were widely recruited to the imperial palace. Allthese made the flower and bird painting have been prosperous at a time.Xuande Emperor preferred flower and bird painting, and he himself was an excellentflower-and-bird painter. His two handed down paintings had a high level of painting and appreciating,and correspondingly the court painters had high level too, so the art academy was famous at that time.Under the emperor’s advocating, court painter works gradually dominate the painting circle, and had theleading role of the flower-and-bird painting style at that time. In the meantime there are a variety ofstyles in the flower-bird-painting, such as the paintings with exact delineation and enriched colours andink paintings by freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting.Freehand brushwork is the basic technique of expression in traditional Chinese painting.According to the development process, there is a period of both craft and freehand brushwork, whichserves as a link between past and future. Freehand brushwork and realistic painting are not completelyopposite and have certain interoperability.Craft, not only refers to the rigorous assignment of pattern, the fine line and uniform color in thepainting style; freehand brushwork should not only come along with the free style and does not payattention to regular elements. Craft and freehand brushwork are not only technical performance, but alsomental representation.In traditional Chinese painting, freehand brushwork and vivid and neat details should also be thetechniques of expression, which will make the painting style neat and delicate, and details endowedwith the spirit of freehand brushwork.The line drawing in traditional Chinese painting just used ink and brush, did not fill in color, butstill can express ideas vividly, so the vivid expression technique of the Chinese painting is drawing line.This thesis is based on the interpretation of the philosophical meaning of line developed into a specialform of line drawing, and the birds and flowers works are diversified in the period of Ming dynasty asthe breakthrough point. This paper studies the linear thinking and craft with freehand brushwork in theflower-and-bird paintings, and how to use neat lines and freehand brushwork in the flower-and-birdpainting.
