| In the Tibetan version, King Gesar is described as both reincarnated figure of the founder of Tibetan religion and conqueror of surrounding areas. So people in Tibet seem to approach the epic in these three ways:Firstly, being a part of their belief. Secondly, being a part of their history. Thirdly, being a unique type of poem and consider it as one of the few living epics in world. If we try to trace the roots of this epic, where did it come from and who was King Gesar?Neighbor-ethnic groups such as Mongolian records show that there are several interesting parallels between King Gesar and the famous King Gesi’r. Accounts of Gesi’r life show many similarities with the pattern of King Gesar’s life:both of them spent a queasy, un-peaceful life as being heroes in separate regions. However, Gesi’r lived more than several hundred years later than King Gesar, so is there any possibility that the Epic of King Gesar can be an adapted version of the history of Gesi’r? Apart from their names, Gesi’r and Gesar, are there any other similarities between them in terms of their history, literature, religion? Some Tibetan scholars argued that the Epic of King Gesi’r was imitating the history of Gesar. Others argue that the epic was created by the Mongolians from a collection of ancient legends, myths, verses, proverbs and various other folk cultures of Mongolia. However, the truth lies probably somewhere in between these two theories. Therefore, in order to get a broader perspective, I think the Epic of King Gesar deserves to be more thoroughly discussed.However, through studying the ancient legends, myths, verses, proverbs and religious,various other folk cultures of Tibet, furthermore, analyzing the elements of cultural phenomena founded in Epic of the King Gesar, here in my article attempt to conclude Epic of King Gesar has been truly gradually doing by Tibetans. |
