| This report is concerned with the simulated E-C simultaneous interpreting project. The10speeches are chosen from Your Weekly Address by the U.S. president Barak Obama, dating from January,2013to January,2014. This project aims to improve the author’s interpreting skills. In order to enhance the persuasiveness and calling effect of the speeches and add to the atmosphere, President Obama used plenty of parallelisms. This causes two main problems during the interpretive process:one is the large amount of information in the parallelisms cross sentences and parallelisms cross paragraphs; the other is the absence of sentence elements in the parallelisms of verb-object constructions and parallelisms of noun phrases. What add to the difficulty in SI are the strict time limits of SI and the differences between Chinese and American ideologies.According to the Sense-Based Theory, what interpretation should deliver is solely sense, rather than language itself(Seleskovitch:1979). Under the guidance of the Triangular Model, the author followed the three steps of comprehension, deverbalization, and expression and extracted the information from the parallel structures in English, then expressed the corresponding parallelisms in Chinese.Given the similarities and differences between Chinese and English parallelisms and the interpretive principles of SI, the author employed the strategy of delivering sense. When interpreting the large amount of information in complete parallelisms of sentences and paragraphs, the author applied the methods of syntactic linearity and information reorganization; for the absence of certain sentence elements in incomplete parallelisms, the author preferred the methods of supplement and simplification and that of adjustment. |
