Confucius is a representative figure of Chinese traditional culture. Confucius institute is a nonprofit education organization established by Confucius Institute Headquarters, namely "Hanban", for the purpose of teaching Chinese and spreading Chinese culture. The study of the Confucius institute is not only helpful to explore the cultural output promoted by the Chinese government, but also helpful to realize the communication between China and the world. In this paper, the accumulated data of the Confucius institute is used with the Negative Binomial Regression Model to study the influence of geographical distance, cultural distance, political distance, and bilateral relations on the establishment of Confucius institute. We also compare different paths of the Confucius institute and Confucius class. Study has found that after adding political and cultural distance, the function of geographic distance is no longer significant. The influence of cultural distance is significantly positive, indicating that the establishment of the Confucius institute is for the purpose of promoting cultural identity. The political distance focus on the government administrative environment has negative influence on Confucius institute, while the political distance focus on institutional environment has no significant influence. In bilateral relations, the bilateral political relation measured by the diplomatic duration is not significant, while the bilateral economic relationship measured by the amount of trade has a significant positive effect. Compared with the Confucius institute, the establishment of the Confucius class is more flexible, which is only affected by bilateral economic ties. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction. The second part introduces the general situation of the Confucius institute, and analyzes the possible factors that affect the establishment. The third part introduces the model framework, variables and data sources. The fourth part reports the empirical results and robustness test. The last is conclusion and policy meaning.
