Oscar Wilde’s creation put his aesthetic theory into practice, at the same time,put thetragedy consciousness which was rooted in the social reality and his life into practice.Wilde has only one tragedy, but a reader can find a lot of sublime and deep tragicconnotation,and feel desolate and aesthetic sufferings,and feel the reflection and certaintyof human dignity in his many works. The tragic meaning of Wilde’s works is meant toenhance artistic appeal of his works, makes them so beautiful, meaningful and profound.The tragic meaning of Wilde’s works pays close attention to people’s fate, throughshowing the spirit of people who are suffering to show conclusive evidence of humanvalues. Wilde’s works present the dignity of life by writing death, contrast the noble peopleby describing the emotional harm, highlight the value of the ideal by displaying the idealdisillusionment, praise the valuable things in life in a negative way. The causes of thetragic connotation of Wilde’s works are complex, first of all, many contradictions andconflicting factors in values in society of the Victorian era provided writing material forWilde. Secondly, decadent literary trend and tragedy literary tradition provided literaturesoil for Wilde’s tragedy writing.Finally, Wilde’s tortuous life experiences gave birth to hiscompassion by osmosis. Both the form and content of Wilde’s writing makes his tragicworks high artistic value and profound practical significance.The artistic value of hisworks lie in the aesthetic form of tragic meaning’s realization, the "aesthetic sorrow" isvery moving; meanwhile the aesthetic style of his works is deepened by the complex anddeep tragic connotation, the "tragic beauty" is affectionate.The tragic connotation’spractical significance of Wilde’s works is that it reflects the cruelty and sadness of thesocial reality, comforts people with lofty characters, and makes people beyond thesufferings of the reality with aesthetic writing style.To explore the tragic connotation of his creation is meaningfui for the further study onthe aesthetic value of his works, for reviewing his aesthetic theory, and for the reader tounderstand his works.
