This is a critical commentary on the translation of the first three chapters of The Last American Frontier by Frederic Logan Paxson. The original text discusses the shifting American frontier, in the continual process of moving westwards and the conflicts between Indian tribes and the white as well as the changes in Iowa and the New Northwest.Under the guideline of skopos rule, fidelity rule and coherence rule, the translator concentrates on explaining how to translate words from three aspects, namely, choice of words by context, translation of polysemy and translation of words by annotation. The choice of words is closely related to context and a polysemous English word can be translated into different Chinese words according to word class, the meaning as well as the changing contexts. Apart from these, it is efficient to make full use of the textual notes and footnotes to explain words with cultural connotations.
