China maritime industry has achieved rapid progress with the prosperous development of the world navigation industry, and the International Marine Conference performs a significant guiding role in the development of China maritime industry. Therefore, the accurate translation of international maritime texts is important for China to fulfill the maritime conventions, to amend the related domestic terms and regulations, to promote the capacity of maritime management, and further to advance the development of China maritime industry. With the opening speech of ninety-third meeting of the Maritime Safety Commission (MSC) and the speech given by the Secretary-General on the twenty-eighth session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) being the translation texts, this report illustrates the translational methods of amplification and omission with translation examples, which aims to convey the core content of the meeting to domestic readers in the most effective way.The complete corresponding of words, phrases and sentences within two languages is extremely difficult because of the expressive discrepancy between Chinese and English. Therefore, amplification and omission should be applied during the process of translation,so as to narrow the differences between source language and target language. In the first section of the paper, the definition of amplification and omission are given with the illustrations of examples. In the second section, this paper depicts the application of amplification and omission in the translation of maritime conference texts. For amplification, this report illustrates the method from perspectives of lexical usage and rhetorical devices. In the aspect of lexical usage, the target text is translated by amplifying Chinese temporal words, nouns, verbs and classifiers; while for the aspect of rhetorical devices, the target text is translated by adding modal particles and the plurals. For omission, this report demonstrates the method by omitting articles, prepositions, and verbs from the target text. In the last section, a conclusion of translation method is provided to summarize the whole text. The precise and accurate using of amplification and omission in the translation of maritime conference texts would make the target text more laconic, lucid and fluent, so as to close to the function of target language.
