After the official prohibition in the later Northern Song Dynasty, Su Shi’s composition was once again regained its popularity in the Southern Song Dynasty. His works were thoroughly and extensively studied by others and had been spoken highly of. Meanwhile, Su Ci-poetry was praised among everyone. However, from what was written in Southern Song’s Wen Hua-works of words, Su Shi’s prose have shown very different characteristics in Southern Song people’s acceptance and reviews, it is much more controversial than any other types of his works. Start with Southern Song’s Wen Hua-work of words and referenced by relevant notes, this thesis observed the criticism and acceptance towards Su Shi’s prose by Southern Song people and studied its cause and influences. This article is divided into four parts. The first chapter focused on the positive reviews and special intension towards Su Shi’s prose in Southern Song’s Wen Hua-work of words. Although Su Shi’s works were fund and praised throughout every dynasty, the appreciation and acceptance varied due to the different factors, i.e. social statues, aesthetic tendency. Compared to the later dynasties, the Southern Song people showed a great practical attitude towards Su Shi’s works; they focus more on his argumentations which include political essays, history essays and other kinds. Furthermore, the Southern Song people have conducted the proper methods of article science to study and research, which were shown in the analysis, absorption of Su Shi’s presentation techniques and the pursue of his articulate spirit in Southern Song Wen Hua-work of wordsThe second chapter concludes the criticism towards Su Shi’s prose in Southern Song Wen Hua-word of words. First of all, the essay environment of Southern Song has changed; under this brand new environment, Su Shi’s prose has been inherited and expanded. Ye Shi from Yongjia sect could be called the representative who inherited Su Shi’s context among Southern Song essayists. Meanwhile, the Neo-Confucianism which was traditionally considered as Su Shi’s opponent actually accepted a lot of Su Shi’s works. The fourth chapter is the case study of the criticism by Zhu Xi towards Su Shi’s prose. Zhu Xi was a distinctive yet representative character among all the essayists who study Su Shi’s works who proposed abundant criticism. The direct reason was the academy education Zhu Xi carried through, yet the deep reason laid in the differences of articulate characters and self-cognition, which actually represent the two opposing extremes in Chinese literati, to conclude is "teachers" and "friends".This study was based on the criticism of Su Shi’s prose from Southern Song Wen Hua-works of words, whether this praise or reproach are considered reasonable or not in contemporary time, they could all be used as references to take a peek at the whole essay development in Southern Song Dynasty, the psychological change in Southern Song literati and more importantly, to benefit the study of Su Shi’s prose.
