| Folk custom is a writer’ aesthetic objects and aesthetic emotional carrier in literature. It exist in a large number of Chinese contemporary prose. Among it, the contemporary western prose writer’s creation is particularly prominent. Although for the western prose research community has attention, but the study of the western prose folk writing is relatively weak. This paper attempts to put the new era western prose in the background of folk custom culture to inspect, discusses its aesthetic pursuit and spiritual qualities, explore the western prose writer’s cultural psychology and zeitgeist, summarizes the new era folk customs in the western prose writing of the unique artistic charm and its significance and value to the development of contemporary prose.In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the paper is divided into three chapters:The first chapter discusses the cultural implication in western folk prose writing. Western essayist common concern with the west, but is not the same as the focus of each writer, like Ma Lihua focusing on snowy plateau, Zhou Tao’s attention of Xinjiang, Jia Pingwa forcing the writing of shangzhou and so on. For their own national identity belongs, western essayist influenced by the western multi-ethnic culture, explore in different angles through the folk writing. Represented by jia pingwa "present" examine for the national culture, represented by Ma Lihua conception of "the other" compare with his and our national culture, represented by cheng-zhi zhang "returnees" in an attempt to recover national culture memory, all seek national culture spirit. In addition, since Western essayists long time to take root in the western with people live together, in the folk writing it reveals the underlying distinct consciousness, exhibits the most ordinary daily life for western people, highlights the beauty of human sympathy and human nature.The second chapter is to explore the intention of folk writing which was emphasized by the Western prose writers. Western prose writers have been living in a particular region for a long time. As the major roles of the creative party, they start from self experiences which are effected by their area, put the experiences into their heart and turn their aesthetic subjects into the scenery of western area and folks. What’s more, most of them lived in the Western area in their childhood or youth. They know very well of folk civilization in the Western, which made they no efforts for creating with the strong emotional feeling and the compliments for their own hometown. In addition, located in the western border, politics, economy and culture of Western are relatively poor compared with the developed Eastern and central part, which we called gap that make a marginal consciousness by Western prose writers. They desire to declare itself ordinary and extraordinary to seek a cultural identity and sense of belonging.The third chapter is to discuss the aesthetic value of the western folk prose writing. It has rich folk imagery which contains the unique advocate that highlighted by the Western folk writers. They insert emotions into scenery, transfer emotions to subjects to achieve a bright aesthetic imagery which combined scenery and feelings in a perfect bonding.In short, the cultural implication and aesthetic style of prose in the western sector of contemporary prose is unique, but there are also various deficiencies, such as lack of creative subjectivity, the absence of a single aesthetic and urban folklore of other issues. Western prose in the new century will face new opportunities and challenges. |
