In this paper, the main research object is the University and college ’s visual communication design curriculum setting of Hunan province in China and Vitoria State in Australia. Based on the comparative study of visual communication design curriculum setting between Australia and China,taking Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, La Trobe University, Monash university in Vitoria and Hunan Normal University, Hunan University of Commerce, Changsha Social Work College in Hunan province as examples separately, this study aims to find the reasons of success of design education in Australia,and then learn the experience and lessons to promote the development of design education in china.Firstly, the introduction part mainly introduces the research background; research status of related topics and practical significance of comparison of design courses between the two countries; the research methods and purposes; research contents; main opinions and innovations of this paper. Secondly, the paper describe the origin and development overview of Australian and Chinese modern design education, which in different situation involving politics, economy, culture and history. Meanwhile,through the brief introduction about general situation and the content of art education in primary and middle schools in China and Australia, it expounds the influence on the higher education of designeducation from family education in primary and secondary schools statement. Thirdly, the paper presents the general situation of institutions of higher education of design and visual communication design course content, taking Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, La Trobe University, Monash university of Vitoria in Australia and Hunan Normal University, Hunan University of Commerce, Changsha Social Work College of Hunan province in China as examples separately. Then, in the following analysis and summarize chapter, the paper analyses design education in two countries from various angles through comparative research of courses between the two countries and summary of the design curriculum setting of art colleges in China. It also shows the experience could be learn by Chinese design education from Australia. Finally, it summarizes the advantages of curriculum setting in Vitoria by comparative study and proposes research prospect.
