Contextual analysis, namely the analysis of language environment, is an important topic in modern linguistics. It consists of intralinguistic contextual analysis and extralinguistic contextual analysis. The intralinguistic contextual analysis is made up of two aspects:the words and the sentences, while the extralinguistic contextual analysis consists of two aspects:the situation and the culture. The context limits and explains a word. And the accurate understanding of a word mostly based on the context in the process of translation. That is to say, if the translator wants to understand a word accurately, he cannot simply read the literal meaning of this word. Instead, he should combine the language environment in which the word exists in with the literal meaning. He should also use contextual analysis theory to understand the sentences, paragraphs and chapters. Only in this way, can he make the right judgment. The theory of contextual analysis has been widely studied. However, not much has been explored in novel translation with the contextual analysis theory. This thesis based on the writer’s practice of translating an English novel The Great God Pan into Chinese. The connotation and classification of contextual analysis will be first talked in this thesis. The writer chose many typical examples to elaborate the application of intralinguistic contextual analysis and extralinguistic contextual analysis when you want to understand and grasp the meaning of an article.
