| This is a translation project report on the translation of Garrets and Pretenders:A History of Bohemianism in America (Chapter7-9), which is written by Albert Parry. As the major historical source for the study of Bohemianism, this book is the first classic narrative recorded the lives and manners of the America’s Bohemians in nineteenth and and twentieth centuries. The translation of the text helps people to understand the historical connotation of Bohemianism and has certain referential significance for American literature research. By the guidance of polysystem theory, the writer mainly adopted foreignization and various translation techniques to translate the source text. This paper has four parts. The first section includes background of translation project, introduction to the text and the author’s intention, and the significance of the translation project. The second section mainly demonstrates polysystem theory and foreignization strategy. The third section is case studies. The writer discusses translation difficulties by combining polysystem theory with translation practice. The last section concludes the application and limitation of polysystem theory and the comprehensive qualities of a good translator. |
