The Study Of Mourning Apparel Chart In Zhang Huiyan’ S Ceremonial Etiquette Diagram

Zhang Huiyan(1761-1802), the old name is Yi Ming, the other name is GaoWen,the alias is MingKe, from Wujin,Jiangsu Province. He was dead because of disease in Beijing, the Seventh year of Jia Qing period. He died the age of 42. Zhang Huiyan’s achievements incarnate in study of confucian classic, prose and Ci-poetry. In the field of Confucian’s classic, He proficiented in Zhouyi, and was called "the Period of three people to learn YIM with Hui Dong, Jiao Xun together. He proficiented in Ceremonial Etiquette and wrote the book called The Ceremonial Etiquette Diagram(18 volumes) and the book called The Apperception of Reading Etiquette. In the Literature, He is called the “Ming and Qing Eight” by Qiang Zhonglian and is the representative of Yang Lake school of literature and founder of Chang Zhou Ci-poetry school. He compiled Ci-Selection and The Selection of Seventy People’s the Fu Literature.So far, the academic community has concentrated on the Zhang Huiyan’s achievements of literature, Yi-ology and academic sources and courses, but has not study his Etiquette doctrine and Etiquette works in system. This thesis starts with the Mourning Apparel Chart of Etiquette Diagram, to study the Zhang’s Etiquette doctrine,to explore his viewpoints about the Ceremonial Etiquette especially the viewpoints about the Mourning Apparel Commentaries. The chapter 1 expounded Zhang Huiyan’s lifetime and works. The important part is expounding his academic origin.The chapter 2 is a detailed expounding about the The Ceremonial Etiquette Diagram,including the writing, printing and publicing of versions, style of the book, the characteristics of book. In the long time, Zhang’s ritual study has been neglected.This chapter can makes a clear understanding of The Ceremonial Etiquette Diagram.The chapter 3 is an very important part in the thesis. Firstly it expounded the style and characteristics of Mourning Apparel Chart. Secondly it analyzed details in Diagramstep by step. At last, it compared Zhang’s writing pattern and evidences of principle in Chart with other scholars’. The analysis section in this chapter includedthe Wufu system, the structure of mourning apparel, the time limit of mourning apparel, writing pattern and evidences of principle in mourning apparel and the citation in Mourning Apparel Chart. Through the analysis,we can understand Zhang’s Mourning Apparel concepts, patriarch clan system concepts and his ideas of ritual study. In the comparison section, we can study how Zhang Huiyan inheriting predecessors’ viewpoints and the influences of Zhang’s principle to sholars in later ags. The chapter 4 is another important part. Thise chapter explores the scholars in post generation who study the Zhang Huiyan’s book. This thesis picks Cao Yuanbi,known as the master of the study of Confucian classics, to cite and proofread in his book Ritual Doctrine. In chapter 3 ‘Pictures and Diagrams’ of Ritual Doctrine, Cao Yuanbi cited Zhang Huiyan’s Mourning Apparel Chart and revised Zhang’s omissions by Cao’s own study. This thesis listed all Cao’s revised parts and analzed the rasons.By study the citing of Etiquette Diagram, we can explore the intercommunity between them in ideas of scholarly research and ritual study, and also the influence to later ages by Etiquette Diagram.
