John Franklin Jameson was a great historian between 19 th and 20 th century. He was one of the leaders in the professional activities of American historians. While in his life, the historical writing was not much, but through the historical practice he promoted the professionalization process of American History. His activities involved in all kinds of the professionalism of American historiography: edited historical materials, cultivated professional talents, founded historical academic society and magazine, established American National Archive. Jameson made a great contribution to American historiography. He has not only vastly enriched American historiography, but also made the turning of American historical research from amateur historians to professional ones, brought American historiography to the professional development.In this dissertation, the text consists of four chapters:The first chapter, focuses on Jameson?s living social background and academic career to analyze his historical background of thoughts and ideas.The second chapter, discusses Jameson?s cultivation to American historical professional talents, focuses on Jameson?s teaching practice.The third chapter, introduces and analyzes Jameson?s historical writing and materials editor.The fourth chapter, elaborates Jameson?s organizing and founding historical academic societies and magazine, focuses on the American Historical Association and American Historical Review.The last chapter, analyze Jameson and the creation of American National Archive.
