During the Six Dynasties, China has witnessed the divisions of country by warlords, great migration, social upheavals and disasters. The Chaos of Yongjia in Western Jin Dynasty, brought chaos to the Central Plains, which forced the people of the north migrate south. Jiangxi, with its advantageous natural and social conditions,sheltered lots of migrates and genteel of the north. In the period of Three Kingdoms,Jiangxi’s economy, agriculture and handicraft industry for instance, experienced some degree of development. Jiangxi enjoyed relative political stability and suffered little disturbance from the war, farmlands were cultivated rapidly, and there was thousands of people in the areas near the Poyang lake. Among the people who migrated to Jiangxi, there were common people; there were also cultural elite and distinguished talent, who contributed greatly to the cultural development of Jiangxi. And the Mount Lu became the hub of their activities, Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist gathered around the mountain where they started a cultural upsurge. Jiangxi has many interest places such as the fantastic views of the Dragon-and-Tiger Mountain, the Three-qing Mountain and Poyang Lake, all are fitting places for the hermit, Buddha and Taoist to practice Buddhism or Taoism, just like the Taoist Ge Xuan who lived the life of a recluse in the Ge Zao mountain.This paper summarizes the important points in Jiangxi’s cultural development of this period: Firstly, the Buddhist culture, with the Buddhist Hui Yuan as its leader,apart from the great achievement of Hui Yuan, there were some other Buddhists,retired scholars who has close relationships with Hui Yuan, for example, Hui Yong of the West Wood Temple, and Liu Yi-min and Xie Ling-yun. The famous Buddhist Samghadeva from the West nourishes the Jiangxi Buddha culture with foreign elements, promote the further development of Buddha. In the Southern Dynasties,promising young Buddhists continue their predecessors’ work, hermits Zhang Xiao-xiu and Liu Hui-pei once has brought the Buddhism in Jiangxi into prosperity.Secondly, the Dragon-and-Tiger Mountain Taoist culture which originated of EasternHan Dynasty. Generation of successors of the Taoism left their footprints in the development Taoism. The activities of Taoist Ge Xuan and Ge Hong in Jiangxi are quite frequent, which left many anecdotes. Lu Xiu-jing reforms Taoism in Jiangxi,which might be the turning point of Taoist development, and moreover his reform left behind Jian Ji Temple and some other typical Taoist architectures. Thirdly, the spread of Confucianism in Jiangxi by the Three Recluse of Xunyang, Fan Xuan and Fan Ning, the landscape work of Xie Ling-yun, and historiography, calligraphy, painting,art and other folk cultures.This paper closely focuses on the studies of genteel that migrate to Jiangxi during the Six Dynasties, and explores the meaning of their cultural activities. In the exordium, it includes the reason for selecting the subject, academic review, and briefly touches on the paper’s academic value. In the beginning of the body part, it analyze the number of people who migrate to Jiangxi and the route of their migration,and then falls into Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism three categories, and studies the historical meaning and histories of their cultural contribution. Under the advance of the genteel’s activities, Jiangxi local culture absorbs the foreign culture and starts to rise. Obviously, culture requires spreading and communication, and they have wrought glorious chapter in history.
