Studies on the feminist thought are attracting increasing attention from people in nowadays society, and female’s social status has evolved from the early signs to waves of feminist movements, which is a long process. The true development of feminist thought began from the 19 th century in Britain. The 18 th and 19 th century was the period of great revolution in the European society. Under the influences of the enlightenment thought and industrial revolution in the 19 th century, England’s economy developed rapidly, and there existed a strong atmosphere of democratization in society. It is because of the development of enlightenment thought and capitalism that feminist thought could emerge and develop. With the progress of the society, the feminist thought in England in the 19 th century, also experienced a process of springing up, from the awakening of female self-consciousness in the early 19 th century to the fight for social rights after 1880 s.Although the 18 th century is called the Age of Enlightenment, and the 19 th century is called the Age of Reason, but these seemingly civilized words could not hold up women’s social status. The longing for freedom and equality enables these feminists to advance on the way of feminism. There are several British feminists in the end of the 18 th century including Mary Wollstonecraft who is called the "pioneer of modern feminism". She put emphasis on women’s right of education and believed that the realization of feminism required women to awaken in thought. Harriet Taylor and John Mill in the second half of the 19 th century deepened and expanded the scope and concept of feminism. Taylor mainly asked for equality of human rights in the democratic age, and expanded the scope of feminism, making further requirements for property right, the right to vote and right of education. While Mill’s thoughts promoted the feminist thought from the partial pursuit for some rights to the overall enhancement of thought and spirit. He is a firm believer of liberal feminism and is called "the master of liberal feminism". Under the framework of liberalism, he further put forward that women should have the suffragevoting right. The development of feminist thought in the 19 th century in Britain also had a great influence on the British society at that time. First of all, the economic status was improved and the independent economic income enabled women’s social and family status to get changed. Secondly, the popularity of education improved British women’s education level. There emerged specialized women’s colleges and with theincreasing number of women receiving a high education, the development of education also made the feminist thought more deeply rooted into people’s hearts. In this way, women’s self-consciousness thoroughly awakened and they began to be active in the social public affairs, putting the feminist thought into social activities and widely participating in various activities in social public domains. Finally, the remarkable female literary achievement in the 19 th century was also developed under the influence of feminist thought. The expression form of literature is the shadow of real life. Many female British writers in the 19 th century were all influenced by the feminist thought, which was also a reason for the prosperous development of female literature in Britain in the 19 th century. Their works reflected women’s difficult living conditions in society in all aspects, as well as those women’s striving and struggling for self-improvement and self-entitlement.The social situation and development process in Britain in the 19 th century were also influenced by the feminist thought, and they interworked, pushing forward the progress of society. However, the inequality between men and women’s social status and social concepts still existed. The meaning of the feminist thought in the 19 th century did not consist in creating waves of liberty and equality in the British society then, but it was the footstone of the later feminist thought. It is just because of the influence and achievements of the early feminist thought that the modern relatively equal and harmonious society of both sexes could form.
