A Study On The English Translation Of Culture-loaded Words In Fortress Besieged From The Perspective Of Conceptual Metaphor

For the past few years, the combination of translation studies and other disciplines become close increasingly. The studies of translation from the perspective of cognitive linguistics attract more attention of scholars both at home and abroad.The theory of Conceptual Metaphor is a new perspective of cognitive linguistics. And Conceptual Metaphor theory reflects language cognition from the aspects of structural metaphor, orientational metaphor and ontological metaphor. With the deepening of the study of Conceptual Metaphor theory, it has been applied to many fields, such as literary fiction, linguistics, newspapers, etc.With the smoothly procession of translation activities, the communication between language and culture becomes closer gradually. And there are inevitably lots of Cultural-loaded words in the process of translation. Cultural-loaded words will reflect a nation’s cultural characteristics and affect the communication between culture and information. However, the gap between different nations and culture will brings great difficulty to the translation of Cultural-loaded words.Nowadays, although scholars have some studies of Conceptual Metaphor theory and Cultural-loaded words respectively, the studies of the application of Conceptual Metaphor theory to the Chinese Cultural-loaded words are little. Especially there are rare studies of Chinese Cultural-loaded words from perspective of the three types of Conceptual Metaphor—Structural Metaphor, Orientational Metaphor and Ontological Metaphor. Therefore, on the basis of Conceptual Metaphor theory, the paper discusses Chinese Cultural-loaded words in Fortress Besieged with qualitative analysis. Then it analyzes the feasibility and translation strategies of the application of Conceptual Metaphor theory into the English translation of Culture-loaded words in Fortress Besieged. The discussion of the English translation of Culture-loaded words in Fortress Besieged from the perspective of Conceptual Metaphor theory has a great significance for the cultural communication between Chinese and Western and the studies of translation.
