A Study On Translation And Europeanized Grammar In Modern Chinese

Europeanized grammar of modern Chinese is a kind of language change lexically and syntactically under the impact of English. He Yang points out that this concept not only refers to the newly-formed structures and sentence patters after imitating Indo-Europe languages, but includes such original budding or dormant grammatical phenomenon which become active and develop swiftly by the influence of Indo-Europe languages.A majority of scholars think that translation is closely related to Europeanized grammar in China. Wang Li once said "the source of Europeanization is translation". There are three waves of translation during the long history of China, translation of Buddhist Scriptures during Han-Tang Dynasty, translation of science and technology during Ming-Qing Dynasty and translation of western thoughts and knowledge during the New Culture Movement. Actually, in the 1980s, with the implementation of the policy of opening and reform, the fourth wave sets its stage.Europeanized translation of traditional Chinese should be traced back to the May Fourth Movement. Traditional Chinese witnessed unprecedented changes under the effect of Europeanized translation. In a sense, the evolution of Vernacular after the May Fourth period into today’s Modern Chinese is virtually a process of constant Europeanization.Language contact brings about language change. Translation is a unique language contact. During the process of translation, the source language and the target language interact and language changes take place on both sides.This thesis attempts to analyze the phenomenon of Europeanized translation in the light of the theory of Language Contact. By choosing typical examples from classical works, contemporary works, newspaper, magazines and the Internet, it makes great efforts to make a descriptive illustration of this phenomenon from various perspectives with an intention to reveal the nature of language. The purpose is to guide translators and language learners to cultivate an objective attitude to Europeanized grammar and language change. We should admit that traditional Chinese really made great improvements under the influence of Europeanization. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between positive Europeanization and negative Europeanization. The significant role of translation in the campaign of Chinese culture protection is also discussed.
