This report aims to study the application of the cohesion devices to English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting. Eight post-graduates majoring in English interpretation have been selected to take part in the experiment. Under the cohesion theory of Halliday and Hasan and the guidance of Gile’s the Efforts Model, participants’ E-C records will be transcribed, analyzed, studied and concluded. The experiment focuses on the causes and results about the loss of links or deviations of cohesion, and investigates function and application caused by cohesion devices and the Efforts in E-C Simultaneous Interpreting. According to the interpreting versions of 8 participants, deviations of cohesion from English to Chinese result from the different textual features, such as the lack of referential expression, the various means of substitution/ellipsis, the disjunctive points and inaccurate lexical cohesion. Another reason of loss of link is caused by the imbalance between E-C SI and the Efforts for student interpreters. The results of this experiment prove the practical meaning of cohesion devices in E-C SI and help student interpreters understand and grasp the multiple methods of cohesion devices. The implication of this study is to strengthen the application of cohesion theory to interpreting.
