Report On The Translation Of Chu Chu By American Local Writer Bret Harte

This translation report is based on the short novel called Chu Chu written by Francis Bret Harte. At first glance, this novel seems to depict a horse, but actually it tries to describe human nature. The words and plots are vivid and humorous and it is penetrating and accurate on the perspective of characterization, which fully arouse the interest of readers in the days of the gold rush. His novels play a role in the history of American literature. Chu Chu symbolizes those pioneers who swarmed into California during the Gold Rush in American history. The American spirit is embodied in their fearlessness when they confront difficulties. They attempt to take adventures to start businesses. The ideological purport of this novel also has some connection wih the real society and refleacts the real society. In the process of tranlation, the translator starts with the role image, the character of horse, and the unique local dialect, and takes the plot description, language description, movement description, and environmental description into consideration to keep the literariness of the source language from those perspectives above, and highlights the stylistic features of the novel about the target language.This report has listed comparatively abundant example to demonstrate the literariness is well reflected in the translation compared with the original text. There are four examples on the liveliness of the language,seven examples on the personalization of character’s utterances, replacing the dialect in the source language with Chinese colloquial style, five examples on the the widely use of figures of speech,trying to retain the figures of speech in the target language in order to be faithful to the original one, four examples on the complicated and changing sentence structure, changing the sentence structure, part of speech and grammatical structure so as to accord with the expression of Chinese habits.This report is divided into four major parts. The first part is the description of task, which includes the source of the text, a brief introduction to the author Francis Bret Harte and the main plot of his work Chu Chu. The second part is the process of translating. It consists of three periods, before-translating period, during-translating period, and after-translating period respectively. The third part illustrates how the theory of stylistic approaches to translation is applied into the process of translation and case analysis. The last part summarizes the difficulties that the translator meets and experiences the translator gains in the process of translation. Some unsolved problems are put forward as well.
