| Foregrounding theory is widely used in poetry, linguistics and stylistics studies. Based on the theory of foregrounding, the author analyzes drama translation combining with Ye Zina’ viewpoint of applying foregrounding theory in translation practice in this paper. Drama is both a kind of literary form and art, with dual nature: literariness and performability. The Verge is a drama of Susan Glaspell who wrote in 1921.The Verge is the most innovative work of Glaspell. It is different from the ordinary drama whose dialogue is concise and easy to understand. The language of The Verge has distinctive characteristics of literariness and lyricism. Adding free verse to express heroine’ emotion, its language is veiled and arcane. Glaspell deviated general rules of theatrical creation to convey emotion and theme of this drama. So the text have typical foregrounding features. With the foregrounding translation theory and Leech’s classification of “quantitative foregrounding†and “qualitative foregrounding†as the theoretical basis, this thesis does detailed analyses of semantic deviation, grammatical deviation, repetition, and parallelism. Considering characteristics of drama language, the author puts forward some translation strategies respectively, for example, literal translation, free translation, amplification, division translation and some on. The author wishes the work will do some help for the further drama translation study and practice. |
