China is an ancient civilized country with 5-thousand-year tradition. Many ancient art works have been preserved and developed through ages, among which the most famous one is Chinese calligraphy. Calligraphy is a Chinese culture classic, embodying China’s national spirit. Chinese calligraphy expresses calligraphers’ different thoughts by various forms. Enjoyed by politicians and ideologists of stern rectitude, Standard Script seems upright and foursquare. Semi-cursive Script and Cursive Script are in freely flowing style like floating clouds and flowing water, always enjoyed by free and unrestrained politicians with ambition whose political aspirations are reflected in their calligraphy styles. Standard Script and Semi-cursive Script reflect Chinese fangyuan ideology in which fang stands for regulation and rules while yuan stands for agility and sophistication, the doctrine of the mean, in other words. Containing national spirits, Chinese fangyuan ideology is a cultural legacy of the nation. In all ages, people can know classical artists and calligraphers’ aesthetic conceptions and artistic characteristics from their works. In modern society, art is reflected in all aspects of work and living. In graphic design, combining the Chinese classical calligraphic art with modern life in an innovative way is an efficient path to inherit and promote national spirit. This requires us to identify and integrate the common features of classical calligraphy art and contemporary graphic design in order to revive Chinese classical character art and reveal the unique attraction of contemporary graphic design. This paper aims at identifying the penetration point of the integration of contemporary graphic design and Chinese classical calligraphy by studying Chinese character writing forms and probes into the application of that integration into graphic design through graduation creation.
