Studies On Zhou Zuo-ren’s Cultural Concepts During The Anti-japanese War

Zhou zuo-ren fell into the mire of political rebellion during the anti-Japanese war, but in the political stain surviving his culture bright. In this period Zhou zuo-ren’s cultural discourses mainly focused on hybrid culture,Confucian culture,Japanese culture and folk culture, his cultural concepts not only contain the inheritance and development of the original thought but also incorporate the realistic tendency of the times collision. The fact of the inevitable fall urged him to make new judge and choice in the profit and loss to form a new cultural pattern. This paper is divided into four parts:The first chapter mainly discussed Zhou zuo-ren’s miscellaneous cultural view. The miscellaneous view contains unity and key points. Zhou zuo-ren used his extensive miscellaneous cultural view which penetrated humanity and humanism to against the unity of thought and develop a healthy personality. He got new knowledge and the ethos of change from ancient books and foreign classics which represented by the ancient Greek culture, then he criticized people’s academic malpractice. During this period, Zhou zuo-ren’s writing styles mainly constituted by copy and literary sketches. He expressed himself by borrow someone else’s words. Apart from mild and gentle style of writing, he added melancholy and bitterness.The second chapter discussed Zhou zuo-ren’s reinterpretation and propaganda of Confucian culture. During the May Fourth period, the intellectuals started to discuss the real look of Confucian. By the analysis of the ideal connotation of Confucian culture’s constitution, Zhou zuo-ren set up the image of real Confucian and explored the special reasons of Confucian culture’s reconstitution and emphasize in this period. He got inspiration from Dutch studies and practical learning and believed that by utilizing morality and justice we can achieve the naturalization of ethics.The third chapter discussed Zhou zuo-ren’s research status of Japanese culture. When he studied in Japan, he formed the research interest and constantly revised his cultural research methods. He developed the method from the previous single literary and artistic perspective to a more comprehensive and objective historical investigation which combined folk custom with religious belief. In the era of war he is still trying to promote two countries’ equal cultural exchanges by the translation of Japanese literature, writing prefaces and postscripts with Japanese friends.The fourth chapter discussed Zhou zuo-ren’s research on Chinese folk culture. Zhou zuo-ren’s folk culture research started from the song collection campaign during the May Fourth period, he did a lot of pioneering work in the collation of folk materials and introduction of foreign folk theory. During the war he hided his real meaning and placed his emotions in folk old news to escape. At the same time, he collected much information from the perspective of the history of national life, including the folk daily life and natural objects, folk beliefs, colloquial dialect and folk literature etc, to pursue the spiritual course of the Chinese people and explore the history and culture of humanity.
