With the rapid development of the world’s economy and society, more and more people have come to realize that no country, community or culture can keep isolated. Different countries are connecting together tightly and communicating with each other more frequently than ever. Cultural schema plays an important role in communication. Scholars and experts both at home and abroad have been engaged in the cultural schema which is widely applied to foreign language teaching, reading comprehension, listening comprehension and translation in recent years. As an important subject of cognitive science research, cultural schema theory(CST) has a broad prospect of development and application. More and more experts and scholars are involved in this theory’s significance and application to cross-cultural communication for the development and increasingly prominent practicality of CST.In cross-cultural communication, it is important to possess similar cultural schema and use proper communication strategies in order to attain an effective communication purpose. Under the theoretical foundations of Nida’s division on culture factors and roles of cultural schema in cross-cultural communication, this paper makes three cultural phenomena analysis on the film Pushing Hands by the way of quantitative research and corpus analysis. Based on cultural schema coincidence, conflict and vacancy, especially conflicts and vacancies, the thesis reorganizes cultural corpuses, which include ecology, material, social, religious and linguistic cultural schemata five aspects, and draws the following conclusions: there are many cultural schemata phenomena in Pushing Hands and cultural schema theory can guide cross-cultural films such as the film Pushing Hands.This study theoretically widens the range of the cultural schema theory and testifies the possibility and feasibility of cultural schema theory applied to the description and analysis of the film. In people’s daily life, the thesis provides a new perspective for people appreciating the cross-cultural communication films and improves the ability of people comprehending cultural schema.
