A Discussion On The Research Of The Short Stories Of Tang Dynasty In The Republic Of China

This thesis is a comprehensive discussion on the research of the short stories of Tang dynasty in books, papers,preface and postscripts of the scholars in the Republic of China (1912-1949). The research on the short stories of Tang in the Republic of China was not the water without source, its occurrence, development and brilliant achievement, could not do without its unique academic context. In combination with the social background of late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China, the intersection of Chinese and western culture, especially the foreign literary and culture, caused the people’s attitude about novel changed directly, the translated novels bring new frame, the foreign academic perspective and method inspired the Chinese novel researchers changed ideas, updated research theories. In terms of domestic development and research of the novel, after Liang Qi-chao advocated "fictional revolution", the novel status lifted sharply, jumped into the most excellent literature, the literary and the academic showed an all-time high enthusiasm to novel, fictions and theories since then emerged in endlessly. The concept of novel also changed gradually, the fundamental shift from "Tao-carrying literature" to an aesthetic literature, not only eliminated the theory obstacles on Tang dynasty short stories, but also guided the research direction. Lu Xun, Wang Pi-jiang, Hu Huai-chen, Tan Zheng-bi, Chen Yin-ke started their research in such context. Their research mainly involves three aspects:document handing and publication, analyze the writers and their works and historical research on the short stories of Tang dynasty. Due to the political system and ideology of the Republic of China has a very strong independence, the tang dynasty short stories research also had distinct characteristics. Only in terms of research theory and method, the researchers in the great changes times, on the one hand, inherited good academic tradition from scholars of Qing dynasty, on the other hand, they were with an opening mind to accept the gift of the times, wide horizon actively, fuse new knowledge, and absorb foreign theories, such as evolution, sociology, comparative literature study, to create a new study area. The Tang dynasty short stories researchers of the Republic of China in an unique academic context, had made remarkable achievements. Their perspective, methods, and the research framework they established,benefit to the next generations of researchers. But because they were in the incipient stage of the research of the short stories of Tang dynasty,which unavoidably exists shortage,then the later researchers must pay attention to identify.
