Intertextuality, which emphasizes the interrelation between one text and other texts, exists widely in every language. The concept was firstly coined by the French semiotician Julia Kristeva in the 1960s. The intertextual theory originates from Semiotics, and then has been widely used in literary criticism. Because of the applicability of intertextuality in text analysis, the integrating degree with translation practice and the intertextual phenomenon in the translation process, the theory is becoming a point of theoretical and practical research in translation, which is also useful and meaningful to translation studies. In translating, the decisive functions of the translator reflect in both the transmission of the source text and the formation of the target version. The translator has to make full sense of the source text, follow the procedures of reading, translating and rewriting, and then create high quality translation. The three principles of intertextual translation introduced by Professor Luo Xuanmin are the important embodiments of contextualization of translation and the necessary standards to promote the translation theories and practices. This thesis aims at discussing the application of intertextual theory in translation, the usage of intertextual symbols and the three principles of intertextual translation in the translation practices through analysis of the English translation of a Chinese novel. The works of Yu Hua are renowned for their unique creative perspectives as well as narrative language. His novel Cries in the Drizzle may not be quite as well-known as the other works, however not only the content of the work, but also the method of narration are of distinctive traits of the times that are also the important support for translation studies of this thesis. Through analyzing examples of intertextual symbols the author of this thesis attempts to reveal the character of intertextuality in translation and give explanations to the principles of intertextual translation. The thesis focuses on discussing the relation between intertextual theory and translation practice, analyzing the application of intertextual symbols in the process of translation, and demonstrating the principles of intertextual translation and the practical strategies. It is hoped that the intertextual theory can widen the sight of translation theoretical studies and promote practical research of translation.
