Research On Honeysuckle Motif In The Dunhuang Grottoes

In the research field of Dunhuang cave art, the decorative patterns of Dunhuang murals as a special research is vitally important. Summary in the Dunhuang murals decorative pattern cultural connotation and types of modeling, composition form, color effects and principles of beauty in form, is of prime important guiding significance to study inheritance and development of traditional Chinese patterns in the modern design.Honeysuckle pattern as a main veins among the early caves is a major subject in Dunhuang decorative pattern,this paper conducts date collection in a comprehensive and systematic way. Firstly, this thesis discriminates the origin of honeysuckle pattern and digs deeply the Chinese and foreign cultural factors’influence on the honeysuckle pattern’s evolution and development, systematically sorting out the decorative pattern-honeysuckle pattern’s development from introduction to the evolution and last to development in the Dunhuang frescoes. Secondly, the author collected typical honeysuckle patterns appearing in Dunhuang frescoes through field study and information’s collation and classify them into types according to the pattern shape, composition and structure of these honeysuckle pattern, understanding and summarizing Dunhuang decorative pattern’s rules, creative methods, features and advantages. The author studied the honeysuckle pattern’s different decorative features in different parts in Dunhuang frescoes and the change of pattern’s characteristics in combination pattern, summarizing the formal beauty of honeysuckle patterns in Dunhuang frescoes, serving to the modern pattern teaching and application design. Finally, according to honeysuckle pattern’s style and characteristics in Dunhuang frescoes, the author explored its inspired and reference meaning to modern design, adhering to the natural and traditional principle to create designs with a breath of life and style of the Chinese nation.This thesis absorbs nutrients from the traditional arts, applying and innovating the honeysuckle pattern design’s elements and styles in modern designs through design practice, on the basis of systematic research on honeysuckle patterns. It is this thesis’s purpose and wished result to study how to use the honeysuckle patterns of Dunhuang frescoes in modern designs to create modern designs which inherit the tradition and meanwhile shows the modern life aesthetic requirements and try to use materials and technologies in different fields.
