| After the Daoguang period in Qing Dynasty, Zhang Xuan Epitaph from the Northern Wei Dynasty gained its reputation gradually, honored several times as one of the ancient classic calligraphies. In this paper, the process and reasons of its canonization are sorted and analyzed. It is reasonable to conclude that Zhang Xuan Epitaph is one of the best masterpieces in Northern Wei Dynasty with its artistic beauty as being exquisite, antique, gentle and elegant. What’s more, under the environment of Stele Study, several factors gave rise to its circulation and influence, thus furthering its canonization, such as the admiration, criticism and modeling by a group of calligraphers and scholars(He Shaoji as the representative), the large amount of printing of Zhang Xuan Epitaph and the appearance of its variable reprints and carving copies due to development of photographic printing techniques. Meanwhile, this paper also focuses on the differences in the methods and the artistic demonstrates manners of the copying and recreating between the calligraphers from the middle Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, among those He Shaoji and Hang Qichao are typical. The former emphasized the dynamic artistic calligraphy features, while the latter showed an atmosphere of quietude. As for Zeng Xi, Li Ruiqing and Hu Xiaoshi, they featured in their own styles as being round or square. My own works are inspired by these calligraphers, trying to reveal delicate stippling and a fluid look and fulfill the meaning of calligraphy, just as the saying goes, "Copying the ancient works both rejects me and needs me."... |
