Eugene’s Inter-subjectivity Type Growth In Look Homeward, Angel

Thomas Wolfe’s work Look Homeward, Angel is worth to be read carefully. There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes, so it is no exaggeration to say, in one hundred readers’ mind, the growth of Eugene will have many interpretations. Predecessors’ studies of this work focus on the text, the part of theoretical research is still insufficient, so this thesis try to do more research of theory and critical analysis. Judging from the present condition, the Bildungsroman have a big volume, however, the definition of growth and the analysis of growth is still not deep enough, and Look Homeward, Angel As a typical Bildungsroman, the value of its research is highlighted, cause this is the first time try to analyze the growth of Eugene from the perspective of Inter-subjectivity. This paper use Subjectivity, Communicative Rationality and Inter-sbjectivity to overall view the growth of Eugene from a new perspective.The thesis is made up of three chapters. The first chapter of the paper, starting from the source, make a brief introduction of Thomas Wolfe and the Translation of Look Homeward, Angel, and then starting from Thomas Wolfe’s research in domestic and foreign, state the research status and research depth of Look Homeward, Angel. And proposing to try to use Inter-subjectivity to analyze Eugene’s growth. The second chapter give a detail introduction of Bildungsroman, including its origin and the meaning of Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre. Bildungsroman was born in Germany, but it has a considerable development in Britain and France. This fresh literary mode is combine with British and French national literature, and have produce a lot of good works. At the end of this chapter, introduce the development of growth novel in the United States and the significance meaning of Hawthorne for the United States’ growth novel, and finally led the theme to Look Homeward Angel.In the novel, Eugene’s growth has a transition from Subjectivity to Inter-Subjectivity, for completely present his growth, this chapter are made up of 3 parts. The first part details the philosophy of subjectivity and Inter-Subjectivity. In part2, firstly spread a statement from Eugene’s subjectivity stage, explains why. Because of his personality, he was fighting the effect from the outside with a unconscious mind, and then have a transition to the stage of Inter-Subjectivity. This part choose three people who had influenced Eugene’s personality, they are his father, mother and brother Benn. This stage completely present his transition from Subjectivity to Inter-Subjectivity. In the third part, Eugene has achieved a growth of inter-state body completely. The incompatible with his family members and his hometown forcing him to go to his most important stage of life and to find a new suitable filed of Inter-Subjectivity. After using the all theories above to analyze Eugene’s growth, this paper draw a conclusion that there are 2 fatal factors have influence his growth. One is his transcendental personality and another is the being with others’ influence of unnatural world’s Inter-Subjectivity.
