The Historical Heritage And Current Situation Of Jazz In China(Shanghai)

Back to the early 20th century, Jazz music had been setting roots in Shanghai with the start of the Westernization Movement. During which period, Shanghai, as known as the Eastern Paris, proceeded the popularization of Jazz music with the advantages in social environment, economy and other area. Although its growth has been iced due to political reasons from 1949 to 1980, a new momentum of Jazz music again was born in Shanghai after 1980. In September 2004, Jazz music was officially a subject in Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Which not only shows that the population into Jazz music is rising rapidly, but more importantly implies that Jazz music is conclusive and unique while its appearance meets the needs of that music pieces should be more demotic, popular and also above standard while reasonable.This dissertation contains three chapters:the first chapter is about the preview of Jazz music’s style development in America; the second chapter is about the growth of Jazz music in China (Shanghai); the third chapter is about the periodical research of Jazz music after 1949. Firstly, this dissertation describes the origin and periodical style of Jazz music, analyses the value of it and defines Jazz music preliminarily. Secondly, the dissertation analyses the reason Jazz music started in Shanghai and the limitation in its early period by sorting out the state of its growth in every period. Last, the dissertation gives an expectation of Jazz music through a brief summarization of its present developing status.As the first professional master who major in Jazz Music Performance in Shanghai Conservatory of Music, I would pretty much like to make my own contribution to the development and popularization of Jazz music with my own experience both in study and practice.
