| "SAIBEI 30 BAGATELLES" is a collection piano works composed in 1972 by Mr.Huang Anlun, who accepted from Mr Shao Yuan Xin’s commissioned.Mr Shao was teaching in the Central Wuqi Arts School back then. According to the teaching requirements, the music technique and music style about this piece are neither that of the grand musical creation in the piano works of composer’s other large genre, nor of piano transcripitions of Chinese folk songs. Harmonies style in the piece are mainly based on Saibei music characteristics, combining pentatonic mode with functions, colours, lines and other factors from Major and Minor harmony of western music. This piece has Saibei characteristics, and can be played with not only Saibei musical instruments. We can learn much from the composer’s early endeavour to compose music works with Chinese folk music characteristics. In this paper, I will summarize mostly the harmony methodologies, together with style and characteristics of the harmonies, with an analysis of the harmonic techniques in the works. This essay is divided into three chapters:In chapter one, I will introduce music prototypes and melody characteristics with examples in Saibei music.Chapter 2 is classification and illustration with examples of composing techniques from the perspective of the Modes harmony. In Chapter 3, I will analyse how Mr Huang composed with inspirations from western classical music. In conclusion,I will share briefely my views, based on the analysis above, on piano textbooks composition for Chinese children and on the enlightenment for children’s music education in China. The author hopes that after reading this essay, more people will know and learn this classic piece of music that is very suitable for Chinese children learning to play the piano, and that young people who devote themselves to composing piano works for children will learn something about composing techniques from this eassay. |
