Choice And Transcendence In Dilemma

Isaac Bashevis Singer, a world-renowned American Jewish writer of the 20th century, who uses a powerful and vivid way to record the daily life and mental world of Polish Jewish peoples, and the life condition of Jewish immigrants to America. Thesis uses the method of existential theory, Enemies, a Love Story as the research object, at the same time with reference to his other two novels The Magician of Lublin, Shosha and other short stories, performance Singer existential ideas in work. Paper based on the existing dilemma, selection and transcendence in the works go beyond research and analyze problems, revealed the writer of the complexity of the spiritual world, and the plight of jewish survivors after the war, so make we think about the meaning of life.This thesis consists of three parts. The first part is about characters’ existing dilemmas, which contain hidden God, home in other places and individual ridiculous dilemma. Hidden God mainly talks about the God, who exists existing in an absent and disregardful way, and lives far away from Jews who experienced the extremely crucial world war two; home in other places mainly discusses the dilemma that jews suffered from physical, mental exile and homelessness; under the condition of hidden God and home in other places, personal situation is absurd.The second part is about selection in facing difficulties, which is composed of believing in God or neglecting God, the promised land or continuing escape and individual choice. Pious Jews lieves that the best way to treat holocaust is to obey Jewish creed and canon than before, which can clean sins and withstand the test of God; but there are many people choosing to give up. Rabbi connects God to common jews, however, the Rabbi in the novel is totally a mercenary secular; facing with the difficulty of home in other places, jewish survivors come to America where they want to begin a new life, while they always buries themselves in the past memory, so as to flee away from the promised land eventually. Sartre believes that existence is to make one’s own choice, many people make different choice according to their own situations when they face the absurd situation.The third part is about characters’transcendence, which is made up of beyond the God of God, return to the dream homeland and the way to save the freedom of body.This thesis holds tightly around three core words of God, homeland and individual, it describes dilemma that people face and how people choose and transcend during that time. Each section is interconnected, and the purpose is to find a way to save freely through analyzing the dilemma and choice people facing. Adopting the method of theory and intensive reading, this thesis not only provides a new point of view of interpreting the novel, but also certains social practical significance.
