| Yu Hua is an influential writer in contemporary China. There have been plenty of scholars studying and commenting on his works. Those comments and writings become increasing rich both in depth and entirety. At present, studies on Yu Hua’s novels can be divided into five aspects, including the subject research, narrative model research, writing concept and writing transformation research, characters research and comparative research. Critics have been favored at the researches on time narrative art. However, researches from the spatial perspective to discuss Yu Hua’s novels are still quite weak.Therefore, from the perspective of space, this article tries to analyze several spaces that frequently appeared in Yuhua’s novels, such as the hospital, the town, the countryside, roads, squares, cemeteries, along with their metaphorical meaning, to explore Yu Hua’s unique concerns for people’s real survival status.Space order that people from birth to death in Yu Hua’s novels was applied in this paper. Combined with the meaning of each space itself, it analyzes different spatial pictures’metaphor for the people’s living status at different times. The first chapter discusses the hospital where people were born. By subdividing hospital space into several corresponding spaces, for instance, the delivery room and the morgue, blood chamber and the dissection room, to explore the symbolic implication under the space as well as to peek Yu Hua’s thought about human’s living status and paradox of modern civilization. The second chapter discusses relationships between another space, which are spaces after people’s birth including town and countryside, roads, squares, and human’s hardship. The third chapter discusses metaphor of the space after death -cemetery, to explore Yu Hua’s unique view of death.In his novel, Yu Hua endowed different spaces with different meanings. They found us an unusual world cognition method and showed us real life status which are different from its surface. Although these spaces are not Yu Hua’s originality, the symbolic implications in these spaces only can be elucidated in his novel. Reading the metaphor of space in Yu Hua’s novels is helpful for understanding and appreciating theirs implicated ideas and artistic skills and aesthetic value. |
