The original text is an academic book called Back to Common Sense:Rethinking School Change. Based on this book, the translator has accomplished a selected E-C translation and a critical commentary. Because of the differences between English and Chinese as well as the author’s expressing habits, there inevitably exist some difficulties during the course of translation. For instance, it is hard to transform noun phrases and prepositional phrases into Chinese, cope with the translation of long sentences, especially the attributive clauses, and extend semantic equivalence in a moderate way. Besides, a few technical terms, elliptical sentences and some words with special meanings in the source text need to be interpreted and translated as well. Therefore, in order to address these problems, the translator persists in the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, and endeavors to make the best of semantic and syntactic strategies by applying semantic extension, semantic explication, turning phrases into clauses and reinventing sentence structures to the detailed analysis of typical examples. At the end of the commentary, some experience of translation is summarized.
